Overview
Max McKee is president of the Mart Dock — West Michigan Dock & Market Corp. — and an executive with Sand Products Corporation, one of the oldest family-operated marine businesses on the Great Lakes. The facility he oversees is a 40-acre commercial marine cargo terminal at 560 Mart Street on Muskegon Lake.
The trade is dry bulk: cement products today, with a history of stone, sand, coal and iron ore. Around that sits the shoreside work a fleet needs — vessel servicing, layup berths and seasonal storage — on a sheltered harbour connected to Lake Michigan by a dredged channel.
The dock also carries two vessels that earn nothing. A D-Day veteran ship has been kept afloat here for decades and is now a museum, and a 1966 excursion boat was bought in 2018 to stop her leaving the city.
